- The Supreme Court, through a Constitution Bench (5 judge bench), has restored Congress government in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. State emergency had been imposed in Arunachal Pradesh after the Governor ordered the advancing of legislative assembly sessions. The advanced assembly session had pronounced that the Chief Minister, Mr. Nabam Tuki, had lost the confidence of the House. The legality of such advancement of assembly sessions was challenged. This judgment is the first time the court used the power of judicial review to restore a government when its successor government is still in place. Nabam Tuki has now taken over as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.
- Kerala has brought in a new policy to regulate online cab operators in the state. Online taxi aggregators will have to secure licence from the State Transport Authority (STA) within three months of commencement. Motor vehicles should have digital fare meters with printer, GPS, Web or mobile application for grievance redress and facility for the rider to contact two persons and the local police. The drivers can register or log into multiple online cab aggregators. They will not be compelled to drive a minimum number of hours.
- INS India, the base depot ship of Indian Navy at New Delhi celebrated its 75th anniversary (Platinum Jubilee) on 13 July 2016.
- The Union Government has recently constituted a high-level committee headed by Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian to tackle the shortage of pulses in India. The committee was constituted by the high-level meeting chaired by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi.
- The Union Government has notified the UIDAI (Terms and Conditions of Service of Chairperson and Members) Rules, 2016 to give legal status to Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Presently over 102 crore persons in the country have unique identity numbers and Aadhaar card. The Aadhaar has been linked to more than 12 crore LPG consumers, 27 crore bank accounts, 13 crore ration cards holders and 7 crore MGNREGA workers.
- Technocrat D Rajkumar was appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL). He will succeed BPCL’s current chief S Varadarajan who is retiring on September 2016.He has been appointed to the post for a five-year term.
- The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)has fixed a cap on cancellation fee. As per the earlier proposal the cancellation charges included the base fare alone. Now, with the final rule, airlines can only retain the fuel charges of a cancelled ticket to the passenger. All other charges must be refunded. The rules will take effect on August 1.
