  • National Hindi Divas, an annual literary-day is observed on 14th September in the Hindi speaking regions of India. The Rajbasha awards will be presented by President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. This day is chosen to mark the adaptation of Hindi language as the official language of India by the Constituent Assembly on 14th September, 1949. Hindi written in Devanagri script was adopted as the official language of the Indian Constitution under Article 343.
  • Devendra Jhajharia won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw, F46 event

    held at the 2016 Rio Paralympics becoming the second gold medalist at the Paralympics for the country after setting the world-record throw of 63.97 metres.

  • The 3rd BRICS Urbanisation Forum Meet has started in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and the discussions will be based on investments, urbanisation, formation of new cities, etc. which wll form the Vizag Declaration which will play a role in October when the BRICS’ ministers’ conference will be held in Goa.
  • Sports Authority of India (SAI) and All India Football Federation (AIFF) will jointly launch an online portal for the Global Scouting Programme. Under this, boys of Indians living abroad will be able to play in the Indian team for the FIFA under-17 World Cup that is scheduled to take place in 2017.
  • A list of most powerful women based outside the US was released by Fortune. In the list, the Indian women who were given positions were Arundhati Bhattacharya, the State Bank of India Chief at 2nd rank, Chanda Kochhar, ICICI head at 5th rank and Shikha Sharma, Axis Bank CEO at 19th Rank. The woman who topped the list is Ana Botin, who is the Group Executive Chairman of Banco Santander.
  • Sushmita Rai from Sikkim won a bronze medal at the World Martial Arts Masterships 2016 held at Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do of South Korea.
  • The winner of the MCC Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey was the Indian Railways Men Hockey Team making this their first victory ever in this tournament. They defeated Indian Oil Corporation.
  • Arvind Panagariya, the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, who headed the task force that was to prepare a road map for elimination of poverty submitted its report to the Prime Minister’s Office suggesting setting up of a committee for identifying Below Poverty Line (BPL) and suggested for state participation in defining the BPL population.
  • Ramesh Raskar, an Indian American scientist, won the 2016 Lemelson-MIT Prize. He is the co-inventor of radical imaging solutions including femtophotography, an ultra-fast imaging system that can see around corners, low-cost eye-care solutions for the developing world and a camera that allows users to read pages of a book without opening the cover.
