  1. The World Happiness Report 2019 has been released by The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The report ranks world’s 156 countries on six key variables: income, freedom, trust, healthy life expectancy, social support and generosity. Finland topped the index for the second year in a row and the report notes that Finland has succeeded in generating recipe that’s not dependent on economic wealth. India has witnessed a drop with a 140th place this year compared with the 133rd place in 2018.
  2. The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has finalised the first draft of the comprehensive amendments to the Indian Forest Act, 1927. The amendments provide definitions to important terms that were missing from the law like community and forest. The amendments have been proposed based on the inputs of a core committee Inspector General of Forests (Forest Policy) Noyal Thomas.
  3. India and Sri Lanka will be conducting a joint military exercise Mitra Shakti VI from 26 March to 8 April in Sri Lanka. The exercise is aimed at building and promoting close relations between armies of both the countries and to enhance the ability of joint exercise commander to take military contingents of both nations under command. The first Mitra Shakti was conducted in 2014 in SriLanka.
  4. Social media platforms and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) presented a ‘Voluntary Code of Ethics for the General Election 2019’ to Election Commission of India. The code is aimed at identifying measures that the platforms can take to increase confidence in the electoral process to safeguard against misuse that vitiates the free and fair character.
  5. The International Day of Happiness 2019 was celebrated on March 20 with the theme Happier Together, focusing on what we have in common, rather than what divides us. The first ever international day of happiness was observed on March 20, 2013. March 20 was chosen for its significance as the March equinox.
  6. Kazakhstan has renamed its capital Astana to Nursultan to honour outgoing leader Nursultan Nazarbayev who served nearly 30 years as leader of the oil-rich nation. He was the first president of Kazakhstan and lead Kazakhstan since it emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. It was him who moved the Kazakhstan’s capital from the southern city of Almaty to northern Astana.
  7. Indian airlines SpiceJet has joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA). SpiceJet is the first Indian budget carrier to join the IATA, which has over 290 airlines as members. The membership of IATA will allow SpiceJet to explore and grow its collaborations with international member airlines of IATA through interlining and code shares. IATA which is the successor to the International Air Traffic Association was formed in April 1945 in Havana, Cuba.
