  • Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, has resigned from office after the Supreme Court of the country disqualified him due to the Panama papers scandal. No democratically elected Prime Minister of Pakistan has successfully completed a full term in office in the country’s entire history.
  • BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) have signed the BRICS Taxation Cooperation Memorandum to establish a mechanism for taxation cooperation at an institution level. It was signed by the Heads of Tax Authorities in the BRICS countries.
  • Lok Sabha has passed the India Institutes of Management Bill, 2017 by voice vote. Through this bill, the IIMs have now been declared as Institutions of national importance. It bestows complete autonomy to the institution with a board of an IIM to handle the management of the institution. The board will have greater representation. Moreover, the institutes will be subject to periodic reviews by independent agencies and will be made transparent.
  • The Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices AK Goel and UU Lalit has ruled that police can’t arrest an accused without conducting a preliminary inquiry in dowry harassment cases under S. 498A of the IPC.
  • Scientists from the Oregon Health and Science University, USA have successfully edited the genes of human embryos to correct defective DNA that cause inherited diseases, for the first time. They used the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technology to alter it and used a process called germline engineering.
  • 28th July is being observed as the World Hepatitis Day by World Health Organisation. The theme for this year is “Eliminate Hepatitis”. This day is being observed since 2010.
  • Ajay Singh from India has won bronze in the 2017 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships held at Kathmandu, Nepal.
