  • Every year on 29th August, National Sports Day is observed on the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand. On this occasion, National sports awards were conferred on 29 players. This year, Paralympian Devendra Jhajharia and hockey player Sardara Singh were awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.   • The National Sports Talent Search Portal was launched by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to unearth sporting talent in the country. The Ministry will select talented players based on received information and impart training to them at the Sports Authority India centres.
  • The Union Ministry of Earth Sciences is going to launch Deep Ocean Mission by January 2018 to spur research activities in ocean science and develop technology to harness ocean resources.
  • India and Germany have signed a technical cooperation agreement under the Indo-German Energy Programme – Green Energy Corridors (IGEN-GEC). The main objective is to improve the sector framework and conditions for grid integration of renewable energies with conventional power grids.
  • The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Under-15 Championship was won by India who defeated Nepal.
  • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) opened the world’s first low Enriched Uranium Bank in Oskemen in Kazakhstan. This bank stores 90 tons of LEU, which is an essential ingredient required to make fuel for light water nuclear reactors to generate electricity.
  • Gobindobhog rice, a specialty from Burdwan district of West Bengal has been granted geographical indication status by the Geographical Indications Registry.
  • International Day Against Nuclear Tests was observed across the world on 29th August 2017 with an aim to promote peace and security world-wide.
