  • India will host the 2016 Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) from November 3 to 5, 2016 in New Delhi. The conference will be hosted by the Union Government in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).
  • President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the first edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The summit was organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) with the theme Beyond 2015: People, Planet and Progress.
  • India is seeking greater market access for the domestic pharmaceuticals sector in the Japanese market as India’s share in the Japanese drug market continued to be below par. The announcement was made by Union Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a seminar on promoting India’s exports to Japan under the India-Japan CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) in New Delhi.

  • Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was honoured with prestigious Sustainable Development Leadership Award of the The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). He was presented with the award by President Pranab Mukherjee during the World Sustainable Development Summit in New Delhi. The award was bestowed upon him in recognition of his vision and leadership in environment and sustainable development that made Sikkim India’s first into a fully organic state.
  • All Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected historical monuments and archaeological sites have been declared polythene-free zones. The Union Ministry of Culture has issued an advisory to all State Governments/UTs to support the ASI in keeping monuments polythene free up to 300 meters from protected boundaries.
  • Rani ki Vav (Gujarat), a 900-year-old World Heritage Site was declared as the cleanest iconic place in the country by the Union Ministry of Culture. It was presented with the “Cleanest Iconic Place” Award at the Indian Sanitation Conference (INDOSAN) 2016.
  • Heisnam Kanhailal, one of the major exponents of alternative theatre, Padma Bhushan awardee, theatre trainer, film producer, playwright and director passed away in Manipur.
  • The Centre has announced that  the work related to the management of the Haj pilgrimage, including administration of the Haj Committee Act, 2002 and rules has been transferred from the Ministry of External Affairs to the Ministry of Minority Affairs with effect from October 1.
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up to conduct a critical ‘crew bailout test’ to see how fast and effectively the crew module of an intended space mission could punch out from the spacecraft in the event of an emergency. The test, known as Pad Abort, will be held at the launch pad of SHAR in a month or two.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will sign an enhanced bilateral economic partnership by the end of this year to allow the free flow of services, investments and technology. This will be in addition to the existing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two nations.
  • World Championship silver medallist Jitu Rai overcame the disappointment of the Rio Olympics by winning the free pistol silver in the World Cup Final at Bologna.
  • Viswanathan Anand defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia and remained in the joint third spot in the Tal Memorial chess tournament at Moscow.
  • A group of international publishing houses and publisher associations has said it will appeal against a Delhi High Court judgment rejecting its plea against sale of photocopies of its textbooks. The court had on September 16 rejected their plea against the sale of photocopies of their textbooks, saying copyright in literary works does not confer “absolute ownership” to the authors. The Delhi High Court had also lifted a ban on a photocopy shop located on the Delhi University campus from selling photocopies of chapters from textbooks by some international publishers.
