  • India’s first Peace University was inaugurated recently by Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis at MIT, Pune.
  • August 20th is celebrated every year as Sadhbhavana Diwas or Harmony Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi born on August 20th, 1944 is the youngest prime minister of India.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a gathering of young entrepreneurs and CEOs of startups at an event organised by NITI Aayog. The event called ‘Champions of Change’ was organised by India’s policy think-tank, was aimed at bringing together young businessmen at a place and share ideas.
  • The Union Government decided to launch notes of Rs.50 denomination with base colour as florescent blue under the Mahatma Gandhi(New) Series. The new Rs 50 banknote has a motif of Hampi with a chariot, depicting the country’s cultural heritage, and the Swachh Bharat logo with slogan on the reverse.
  • K. Chandrashekhar Rao, Chief Minister of Telengana, has been selected for the prestigious Agricultural Leadership Award 2017. The Chief Minister has been selected for the award for his innovative services rendered to the welfare of farmers and the farm sector. ‘
  • The Indian contingent created history in the World Dwarf Games by winning a record haul of medals. The 21-men Indian team won 37 medals including 15 golds, 10 silver and 12 bronze medals in the 7th edition of the World Dwarf Games. It was held in Toronto, Canada. Arunachalam Nalini, who won five medals, including one gold.
  • The first three of 24 fast track courts for the State, which will deal with heinous crimes like rape and murder, will be set up in Mumbai and Thane within a year, of which the latter will get two. The other 21 courts will be set up in the State’s districts. The fast track courts were recommended by the 14th Finance Commission to strengthen judicial systems in the States, and the Centre accordingly ordered the setting up of 1,800 such courts across the country within five years.
  • Lack of toilet became a ground for divorce when a family court in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district granted divorce to a woman on the ground that there was no toilet in the house, holding that it amounted to “cruelty”.
