Ratio and Proportion – 1

1. Books about Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and Law of torts in a library are in the ratio 5 : 7 : 8. There is a proposal to increase these books by 40%, 50% and 75% respectively. What will be the ratio of increased books?





2. The ratio of donkeys to monkeys in a zoo is 5:3. The zoo has 16 more donkeys than monkeys. How many monkeys are there in the zoo?





3. 60 litres of petrol is required to travel 600 km using a 800 cc engine. If the volume of petrol required to cover a distance varies directly as the capacity of the engine, then how many litres of petrol is required to travel 800 kms using 1200 cc engine?





4. If 20 men or 24 women or 40 boys can do a task in 12 days working for 8 hours a day, how many men working with 6 women and 2 boys take to do a task four times as big working for 5 hours a day for 12 days?





5. The marks scored by a student in three subjects are in the ratio of 4 : 5 : 6. If the candidate scored an overall aggregate of 60% of the sum of the maximum marks and the maximum marks in all three subjects is the same, in how many subjects did he score more than 60%?





6. Rs.432 is divided amongst three workers A, B and C such that 8 times A’s share is equal to 12 times B’s share which is equal to 6 times C’s share. How much did A get?





7. Two numbers are in the ratio 3:5. If 8 is added to each number the ratio becomes 2:3. Find the numbers.





8. A sample of 96 light bulbs consisted of 4 defective ones. Assume that today's batch of 6,000 light bulbs has the same proportion of defective bulbs as the sample. Determine the total number of defective bulbs made today.





9. Divide Rs 1,020 between A,B and C so that A gets ⅔ of what B gets and B gets ¼ of what C gets. Find the share of each.





10. There are 36 members on a student council in a school and the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls is 3:1. How many more girls should be added to the council so that the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls will be 9:5





11. The ratio if income of two persons is 9:7 and the ratio of their expenditures is 4:3. Each of them saves Rs.200 yearly. Find their yearly income





12. Find two numbers in the ratio 8:7 such that when each is decreased by 12 ½, they are in the ratio 11:9





13. Divide Rs. 2,600 among A,B and C in the ratio 1/2:1/3:1/4





14. Find the number which bears the same ratio to 7/33 that 8/21 does to 4/9





15. Two numbers are in the ratio 7:11. if 7 is added to each of the numbers, the ratio becomes 2:3. Find the numbers





16. A sum of money is divided in the ratio 3:5. If the larger part is Rs. 3125, find the smaller part.





17. DivideRs. 1870 into three parts in such a way that half of the first part, one-third of the second part and one-sixth of the third part are all equal.





18. A hare and a jackal are running a race. Three leaps of the hare are equal to four leaps of the jackal. For every six leaps of the hare, the jackal takes 5 leaps. Find the ratio of their speeds.





19. The ratio of Science and Arts students in a college is 4:3.If 14 Science students shift to Arts then the ratio becomes 1:1.Find the total strength of Science and Arts students.





20. A certain amount of money is to be divided between A and B in the ratio 3:1.But because of a miscalculation A received 1/14 of the total money additionally. Find the ratio in which they divided the money.





21.What number must be added to two numbers, which are in the ration 6:7 so that the ratio becomes 8:9 and sum of the resulting numbers is 289.





22.In a class of 70 students, the ratio of boys and girls is 4:3.Among the girls the ratio of the number of rich and poor is 1:4.If the ratio of the number of rich and poor students is 8:27,find the ratio of the number of rich and poor boys in the class.





23.The value of a diamond is proportional to the square of its weight. It is broken into three pieces whose weights are in the ratio 3:2:5.Find the loss incurred due to breakage if the value of the original diamond is 20,000 Rs.





24.Two numbers are in the ratio 5:6.If 22 is added to the first number and 22 is subtracted from the second number then the ratio of the two numbers becomes 6:5.Find the sum of the two numbers.





25.The monthly income ratio of A and B is 6:5.The ratio of their monthly expenditures is 3:2.If B saves one-fourth of this income; find the ratio of their monthly savings.

    What is the time allocation intended for each of these problems? Many of them would take around 2-3 mins, and that is way beyond what a live CLAT paper will permit.

    the ratio of incomes of two persons is 5:3 and that their expenditure is 9:5.if they save rs 1300 and 900,what is the income of first person ?
