  • India has the largest diaspora in the world according to the World Migration Report (2018), released by the International Organisation for Migration with 15.6 million people. UAE is the most preferred destination for Indian international migrants.
  • World Health Organisation has declared Gabon as a polio-free country.
  • Switzerland unveiled the world’s steepest funicular railway link to Stoos resort. Uttar Pradesh government shall be setting up a research institute for study of Bhagvad Gita in Mathura. This plan was propose by U.P.’s minister of religious works and culture, Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary.
  • Andhra Pradesh government approved a scheme to provide a pension of Rs 1500 to transgenders in the state. Kerala and Orissa have already introduced pension scheme for transgenders.
  • Meghalaya is the first country to operationalize The Meghalaya Community Participation and Public Services Social Audit Act, 2017 which makes social audits of government programmes and schemes a part of government practice.
  • Jokapatha village, a tribal village in Chhattisgarh’s Balrampur district has got electricity connection for the first time.
  • Samsung India collaborated with UNESCO MGIEP (Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development) to launch 360 degree video and Virtual Reality content of Sun Temple in Konark and Taj Mahal. This was launched at the Transforming Education Conference for Humanity (TECH) 2017 in Visakhapatnam.
  • Direct-to-home (DTH) operator Dish TV India Ltd has announced that that the company has received the final approval from the government for closing its merger with Videocon d2h, the DTH arm of Videocon Industries Ltd. The new entity will be called Dish TV Videocon Limited.
  • India won 10 gold and 10 silver medals on the first day of Commonwealth Wrestling championship in Johannesburg, South Africa. Sushil Kumar won gold in the 74kg freestyle category.
  • Georgina Garcia- Perez from Spain won the singles in NECC-ITF women’s tennis championship held in Pune.
  • Real Madrid won the FIFA Club world cup UAE 2017 after defeating Gremio. 7 teams participated in the tournament.
  • PV Sindhu won Silver at the World Superseries Finals in Dubai after losing to Akane Yamaguchi from Japan.
  • 17th December is International Day to end violence against sex workers.
  • Francois Gabart from France destroyed the world record for the fastest non-stop solo navigation of the globe, completing it in 42 days, 16 hours, 40 minutes and 35 seconds. The 34-year-old sailor crossed a virtual finish line drawn between the island of Ushant off France’s northwest tip and Lizard Point in southwest England at 0145 GMT.
  • Vodafone India has appointed Manish Dawar as its Chief Financial Officer with effect from January 1, 2018. Dawar will replace Thomas Reisten.
